AirTies Demonstrates HEVC for Broadband TV with Envivio and Octoshape at TV Connect 2014

AirTies, Envivio and Octoshape deliver high quality video OTT end-to-end using HEVC

London -- March 18,  2014 -- AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced wireless and OTT/IPTV technologies to the broadcast and broadband industry, along with Envivio (NASDAQ: ENVI), a leading provider of software-based video processing and delivery solutions, and Octoshape, an industry leader in cloud- based over-the-top (OTT) streaming technology, announced today at TV Connect 2014 an interoperability demonstration of HEVC adaptive bitrate video, delivered over the public Internet to consumer set-top boxes (STBs).

HEVC dramatically accelerates the adoption of using the unmanaged Internet to deliver satellite-quality video to anyone with a broadband connection. HEVC brings the flexibility to broadcasters to either double the video quality or drastically reduce the bitrates, thus lowering CDN costs. HEVC also increases the coverage area for IPTV services to subscribers with lower broadband speeds. In addition, video on demand (VOD) services such as catch-up TV can now be delivered at much higher quality and lower costs.

“Envivio works with ecosystem partners to ensure interoperability of our solutions, simplify operations, and offer outstanding quality of experience to end users,” said Jean- Pierre Henot, Envivio’s CTO. “The integration with Octoshape and AirTies enables OTT services delivered via the public Internet using the latest generation technologies including HEVC compression.”

Content is encoded and prepared by the Envivio Muse™ software-based encoders using the HEVC (H.265) video codec, significantly reducing the bandwidth required to deliver HD content to devices over broadband.  Octoshape’s Infinite HD-MTM stream acceleration and multicast suite of technologies provide for the distribution of the video across the public Internet globally maintaining the quality of the video, and providing the streams to the operator with the same efficiency and reliability as provisioned multicast IPTV systems today.

HD video is delivered to the television via the AirTies HEVC / Octoshape enabled set-top box. The combined solution represents a significant advancement in economically deployable broadband IPTV/OTT services. AirTies STBs incorporate integrated 11ac wireless

connectivity and award-winning AirTies Mesh technology. AirTies Mesh increases wireless coverage and performance significantly over conventional Wi-Fi implementations.

“AirTies is focused on the impact OTT is having on the Pay TV market,” said Bulent Celebi, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of AirTies. “We are investing in partnerships and technologies that realize the vision of high quality Pay TV services over broadband, and this demonstration with Octoshape and Envivio is an incredible insight to the next generation of broadband powered TV services.”

“Octoshape is proud to be the trusted delivery technology ensuring that the video generated by Envivio makes it across the Internet to AirTies-powered set-top boxes in pristine quality,” said Michael Koehn Milland, CEO of Octoshape. ”With our ability to accelerate video over best-effort networks, along with the IPTV-like efficiency we bring to operators, Octoshape is realizing the shift from Broadcast TV to Broadband TV for our customers worldwide. This enables existing service providers to expand their market globally, and new entrants to have a predictable business model for building their TV business over the Internet.”

AirTies Launches HEVC/4K Wireless Set-Top Boxes Offering Satellite Quality Video over the Unmanaged Internet

Wirelessly streaming 10 HD channels simultaneously eliminates truck rolls to install service

Istanbul, Turkey - AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced wireless and OTT/IPTV technologies, is launching a new family of HEVC/4K set-top boxes that offer satellite-quality live and on-demand video to any subscriber with a broadband connection. By harnessing the compression capabilities of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), AirTies’ new generation of STBs offer double the video quality at the same bit rate and dramatically reduced networking costs. The improved efficiency of HEVC also means that IPTV becomes viable for subscribers without access to adequate broadband speed.

The Air 7410 family of set-top boxes consist of a small OTT/IPTV STB, and a hybrid DVB-T/OTT version available now in trial quantities. All versions utilise the latest Broadcom 7251 System-on-a-chip (SOC) chipset with10K DMIP CPU, an HEVC decoder, 4K TV display and USB 3.0 plus AirTies’ hallmark wireless video connectivity. They will be on display for the first time on the AirTies’ Stand No. 151 at the TV Connect Show in London from the 18-20th March.

AirTies offers operators the opportunity to deliver high quality Pay-TV services to off-network subscribers as well as allowing operators the chance to broaden their subscriber base by offering the latest multi-device, live and on-demand video services to subscribers living in areas with low broadband speeds, or to expatriate communities where the broadband connection is provided by a third party.

The new Air 7410 STB family also incorporates AirTies’ trademark high-speed wireless connectivity capabilities, allowing consumer self-service installation to reduce operator costs. Each comes integrated with the latest 3X3 802.11ac wireless connectivity, offering the capability of streaming ten simultaneous HD video streams. By using AirTies’ patented mesh technology, which extends coverage anywhere in the home and increases performance tenfold when streaming from a PVR to a second TV over traditional wireless deployments, operators are able to offer interference-free, high quality video on multiple devices in multiple rooms whilst minimising content delivery costs. Mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones connect directly to the STB’s achieving the maximum performance they are capable of without impacting TV service quality. On board transcoding allows mobile devices to take advantage of the network cost benefits of HEVC and advanced CDN’s.

According to Bulent Celebi, Chairman and co-Founder of AirTies: “HEVC is really opening up the market and driving strong interest amongst our clients. For Pay TV operators it enables them to broaden their TV Everywhere offerings to anyone with a broadband

connection and it opens up lucrative new markets by allowing them to launch a full Pay-TV service without needing to deliver the broadband service themselves.” About AirTies AirTies was founded in 2004 by a senior management and technical team from Silicon Valley, with the strategic intent to become the market leader for the wirelessly connected home. AirTies Launches a Wireless ‘Set-top Box To Go’

New Portable IP/OTT STB is small enough to fit in your handbag

TV Connect, London - AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced wireless and OTT/IPTV technologies, will be showcasing a portable wireless set-top box, which is small enough to fit into your handbag. Measuring just 10x10cms, the miniature STB attaches wirelessly to the IP gateway and can easily be moved from room to room. It features remote control and home automation capabilities to enable you to programme it remotely and is portable enough to take on holiday, or take around to the neighbours to watch the football.

The combination of wireless connectivity and the device‟s miniature form factor makes it a „Set-top box To Go‟, allowing consumers to take their HD viewing experience with them to the next room or the next country. The STB wirelessly connects to the home gateway and works on any unmanaged internet connection, effectively unbundling the provision of the Pay TV service from the broadband service offering and opening up new revenue-stream opportunities.

The STB‟s small form factor makes it the perfect thin client device for second or third TVs in a multi-room service. The Air 7205 features Zigbee RF4C (Radio Frequency for Consumer Electronics) and on-board antennas allowing it to be remotely controlled. It is based on the Broadcom 7230 System-on-a-Chip (SOC) and supports HTML5, Open IPTV Forum APIs and advanced DRMs, alongside multicast and OTT technologies such as MPEG-DASH, HLS and Smooth Streaming to optimise performance to available bandwidth.

The Air 7205 comes complete with built-in 2x2 802.11n wireless connectivity, operating at 2.4 or 5GHz frequencies, together with its trademark AirTies Mesh Technology, allowing consumer self-service installation and extending the wireless coverage to every corner of the house.

According to Bulent Celebi, Chairman and co-Founder of AirTies: “This new miniature „STB To Go‟ with its ability to wirelessly connect to any Gateway at the press of a button and offer HD TV viewing any place on a standard internet connection opens up the Pay-TV market to valuable new service possibilities such as expatriates or to deliver a Full Pay TV Everywhere service without content or quality limitations.” About AirTies AirTies was founded in 2004 by a senior management and technical team from Silicon Valley, with the strategic intent to become the market leader for the wirelessly connected home. 13 Mar 2014 AirTies Launches World’s Fastest Wireless Bridge and World’s Smallest Wireless Video Access Point and Booster for Triple Play Operators
Next generation wireless technology allows self-service installation of TV services and brings high speed, high quality video to multiple devices in every corner of the home

AirTies Launches World’s Fastest Wireless Bridge and World’s Smallest Wireless Video Access Point and Booster for Triple Play Operators

Next generation wireless technology allows self-service installation of TV services and brings high speed, high quality video to multiple devices in every corner of the home

Istanbul, March 13th, 2014 - AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced wireless and OTT/IPTV technologies, is launching two new versions of its next generation Wireless Video Access Points/APs at the TV Connect show in London from March 18-20th on Stand No.151. Targeted at both Broadband and Pay-TV operators, the AirTies Air 4820 and Air 4920 feature the latest 802.11ac wireless chipsets and simultaneously solve two of the most critical issues facing operators today: the cost of installing a Pay TV service and the problem of consumers not getting the Internet speeds they are paying for when connecting multiple devices in different rooms or on different floors.

The Air 4820 is the world’s fastest wireless bridge using a single chipset (the Quantenna 4.4 802.11ac with beam forming) which increases delivery speeds fivefold over traditional wireless video; from 600 Mbps to 1.7Gbps; and is able to simultaneously stream up to ten HD videos to multiple devices around the home.

The Air 4920 is thought to be the world’s smallest dual-band wireless booster device. The wireless booster features the Broadcom 3X3 802.11ac with beam forming silicon, alongside the 2X2 802.11n silicon, enabling it to simultaneously support high performance video on the latest 5GHz tablets whilst optimising video performance on 2.4GHz devices like smart phones. Ergonomically designed, with a 9x10 cm small form factor, both the Air 4820 and 4920 devices take up minimum space in the TV cabinet.

The next generation wireless devices dramatically outperform Power Line Communications (PLC) solutions by offering support for mobile devices and comfortably streaming ten simultaneous HD video streams. Combined with AirTies Mesh technology to expand the coverage area, performance between the PVR in the living room and the TV in the bedroom can improve by up to ten times, in comparison to traditional WiFi or PLC implementations. Dynamic channel changing and radar avoidance capabilities ensure a pixilation-free and robust Pay TV service, even in extremely ‘noisy’ environments.

Market research indicates that 77% of TV viewers are simultaneously using another device while watching TV. Mobile devices such as tablets, smartphones and laptops can connect to either the Air 4820 of 4920 and achieve their maximum performance without impacting TV service quality. That means that a ‘TV Everywhere’ service can now stream high quality video throughout the entire home.

In order to solve consumer’s complaints of not getting the Internet performance they are paying for many operators are deploying next generation gateways with dual band support for 802.11ac at 5GHz and 802.11n at 2.4GHz. In many cases these devices are installed in cabinets, the basement or near the door resulting in poor WiFi performance even with 802.11ac. The Air4920 connects wirelessly over the high capacity 5GHz link to the new 802.11ac gateways, and can be located anywhere in the house for optimal performance. The Air 4820 & 4920 wireless solutions offer a more cost effective way to upgrade the installed base of home gateways and routers to 5GHz 802.11ac performance and extend coverage range throughout the home using its beam forming technology.

According to Bulent Celebi, Chairman and co-Founder of AirTies: “Many Pay TV operators are now starting to deploy wireless technology to stream HD video to multiple TVs throughout the home. Wireless dramatically reduces the length of time needed to install a new service by technicians. In many situations the consumer can install the TV service themselves, totally eliminating the truck roll.” He added: “This new wireless technology coupled with AirTies Mesh is a real game changer. Not only will consumers see a dramatic difference in Internet performance in every corner of the house but the operator will save a ton of money in the process”.

6 Jan 2014 AirTies integrates Netflix on-demand video streaming with IPTV service for Danish Broadband and TV service provider Waoo!
Launch of first IPTV STB for Netflix

AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced wireless and OTT/IPTV technologies, today announced that it has integrated Netflix with an IPTV service for Danish fibre broadband service provider Waoo!  AirTies has developed the first set-top box to allow subscribers to view Netflix’s subscription-based video streaming services alongside IPTV services, including both broadcast/Flow TV and on-demand HD TV.

The Danish fibre-optic network service provider Waoo! chose AirTies to undertake the difficult task of integrating the dual software stacks to allow both services to run on the IPTV set-top box, using a single user interface to seamlessly navigate between the two services.    An additional challenge faced by the AirTies team was the need to incorporate both the IPTV multicast software stack and the Netflix unicast stack onto a set-top box with just 512MB of memory.  An additional challenge was the difficulty of integrating the Verimatrix DRM for the Waoo! IPTV service with the PlayReady DRM used by Netflix - and still meet the stringent certification requirements set by Netflix to protect the content.

Waoo! CEO, Joergen Stensgaard, said: “The addition of Netflix content to our IPTV service will significantly enhance our business. The total user experience provided by our team and AirTies is outstanding. AirTies has played a significant role in enabling us to continue to meet the growing demand for on-demand video streaming services and we have been very impressed with the customer reaction following the deployment.”

Bulent Celebi, Chairman and Co-founder of AirTies added: “We are proud to be the first company to integrate Netflix and an IPTV service into a single STB.   Our goal is always to offer solutions that provide operators with new ways of differentiating their services. To be involved in such a sophisticated and rewarding project is invaluable for AirTies and we very much enjoyed rising to this challenge of creating a unique user experience that marries together the best of on-demand video streaming services with a high quality IPTV service to offer the best of both worlds.”

27 Dec 2013 Orange deploys AirTies advanced OTT/Hybrid DVB-T STB for the Spanish market
AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced wireless solutions and OTT technologies, today announces it has won an industry leading contract and deployed an advanced STB platform at Orange Spain. AirTies uses innovative OTT expertise to facilitate cutting-edge multiscreen and on demand pay TV services with this progressive Tier One mobile, fixed line and broadband operator.

The Orange Spain STB project win is AirTies’ latest hybrid product deployment combining  traditional broadcast technologies with the advanced features of IP/OTT technology using Microsoft Smooth Streaming and PlayReady DRM. Orange TV customers now have a seamless interface for both OTT and DTT channels alongside services like catch up TV, video on demand and multi-screen access.

The Orange Spain project means AirTies has had to fully integrate with the Orange ecosystem including their UI/resident application, remote device management based on TR-069, Viaccess-Orca Purple DRM and RIGHTv as well as Verivue CDN.

Bulent Celebi, Executive Chairman and co-Founder of Airties said: “Two years ago, AirTies adopted a futuristic strategy that OTT will have a disruptive impact on the pay TV market, not just with streaming services but also integrating these technologies in traditional pay TV. Fueled by the rollout and expansion of Digiturk’s premium content service offerings to international customers, AirTies has accumulated industry leading expertise. We are proud to work with a leading Telco such as Orange Spain, which is already an industry landmark deployment of hybrid DTT / OTT technologies in a Pay-TV service. Using OTT and Cloud technologies has a number of advantages for Pay TV operators. A single head-end manages smart phones, tablets and the main TV via an integrated UI. The operator is able to address any consumer with a broadband connection, with the adaptive bitrate working to adjust to the available speed. Multiple rooms or TV’s can easily be supported without expensive media gateways. New marketing or services can be deployed easily in the Cloud.”

Yves Bazin, GM Product Development of Orange Spain, said “We were impressed with the responsiveness and experience of the AirTies team delivering a complex innovative project on time. This has made possible an outstanding successful commercial launch of our Orange TV service.”

AirTies to exhibit new generation 11ac wireless video solutions and latest HEVC-H.265 video compression at IBC 2013

Description

AirTies, the innovative wireless networking and set-top box company will be unveiling their latest generation of wireless video bridges and set top boxes (STB) on stand 5.B33 at IBC 2013. AirTies will be demonstrating the first 4x4 video bridge to support the new 802.11ac wireless standard. The Air 4820 enables almost triple the throughput of video and data over greater distances to connect more devices, such as TV, Tablets and mobile devices, to stream and view High Definition (HD) video.

The Video Bridge uses the state-of-the art 4X4 Quantenna chipset, providing 1.7Gbps throughput and supports advanced beamforming to expand the field of delivery. This combines with the patented AirTies Mesh software to enables 100% wireless coverage around the home and automatic network streaming optimisation directly from access point to access point. The high-performance video bridge maximises bandwidth usage allowing content to be wirelessly streamed at 5GHz throughout the home to multiple TVs in HD.

AirTies will also be introducing a VDSL Gateway, the Air5770, which is a combined wireless gateway and video bridge with integrated 802.11ac technology. AirTies will also be demonstrating a STB running the latest Broadcom chipset featuring the new video compression standard HEVC-H.265. This new technology will allow users to achieve a higher quality video experience over lower bandwidth: on SD and HD video content it promises to reduce bandwidth by as much as 30-50% while utilising the new Ultra HD TV standard.

AirTies will also feature one of the first STB’s that meets the MPEG DASH adaptive bit rate standard; a new standard for HTTP streaming of content that allows interoperability between a client device and any standard-based server. Also being demonstrated at the show will be a hybrid STB that offers the audience a seamless viewing experience of a live TV channel whether it is streamed via OTT or received through a DVB tuner.

AirTies launches industry’s first next generation 802.11ac wireless video bridge solutions

Supporting the new wireless standard the 4x4 video bridge streams up to six HD channels throughout the home

Istanbul, 21 August 2013 – AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of advanced technology to the Broadcast and Broadband industry, has today announced the launch of the Air 4820 range of wireless video bridges. The devices, which are the industry’s first 4x4 chipset video bridges to support the new 802.11ac wireless standard, will offer High Definition (HD) video streaming solutions for the home with unmatched range and performance.

The Air 4820 enables almost triple the throughput of video and data over greater distances to connect more devices, such as TV, Tablets and mobile devices, to stream and view HD video. With the ability to stream content from a central set-top box directly to others in the network, the Air 4820 delivers up to 1.7Gbps of bandwidth throughout the home and is able to simultaneously stream  up to six HD videos to connected devices whilst optimizing the 802.11ac wireless technology.

The Video Bridge uses the state-of-the art 4X4 MIMO Quantenna chipset, providing 1.7Gbps bandwidth to overcome many of the traditional problems associated with wireless video distribution, such as latency and lost packets. The product operates in the 5GHz frequency band to avoid interference and expand the field of delivery by utilising advanced dynamic digital beamforming along with channel management. This enables the device to regularly scan all available channels for noise, interference and traffic and then select the optimal route for interference-free multi-channel, HD video streaming.

This combines with the patented AirTies Mesh software to enable 100% wireless coverage around the home and automatic network streaming optimisation directly from access point to access point. The high-performance turnkey solution video bridge maximises bandwidth usage allowing content to be wirelessly streamed at 5GHz throughout the home to multiple TVs in HD. Even greater range can be achieved using AirTies’ patented AirTouch technology, which allows customers to self-install a mesh network in the home, including handling all network security and SSID settings.

Bülent Celebi, Chairman and Co-founder of AirTies, said: “With the proliferation of devices, such as mobile phones and tablet devices, continuing to grow we are seeing a demand from operators for solutions that are able to provide greater bandwidth but with low power consumption as consumers connect more devices in the home. With the emergence of the 802.11ac technology in our solutions, we are now able to offer a solution that overcomes the need for greater bandwidth capacity but still deliver seamless high quality HD content.”

He continued: “We are delighted to be leading the way with this technology and provide a solution that enables operators to add additional services to their offerings as we continue to move forward to a fully integrated wirelessly connected home environment.”

AirTies’ Air5650 Wireless Routers and Air4742 Media Streamers Have Been Pre-Integrated With Broadpeak nanoCDN™ to Improve the Consumer OTT Video Experience While Reducing Operator Costs

RENNES, FranceMarch 19, 2013 — Broadpeak, a leading provider of content delivery network (CDN) technologies and video-on-demand (VOD) servers for cable, IPTV, OTT, and hybrid TV operators worldwide, today announced a new collaboration with AirTies Wireless Networks, a leading supplier of wireless home networking and set-top box (STB) solutions.

Philippe Alcaras, CEO of AirTies and Jacques Le Mancq, CEO of Broadpeak

Philippe Alcaras, CEO of AirTies and Jacques Le Mancq, CEO of Broadpeak

Broadpeak’s award-winning nanoCDN™ technology has been pre-integrated on AirTies’ Air5650 wireless routers and Air4742 media streamers to improve live OTT video delivery. Utilizing a combined Broadpeak and AirTies’ solution, cable and telecom operators can cost-effectively deliver live OTT content to millions of subscribers using only a few megabits per second on the operator’s network.

“We are excited to partner with AirTies on this very important initiative,” said Jacques Le Mancq, CEO and president of Broadpeak. “The recent explosion in OTT video consumption is significantly impacting the traditional video delivery landscape. As operators deliver a growing amount of OTT content to more and more devices with limited infrastructure resources, it becomes challenging to guarantee a high video quality, especially for live content. A unified Broadpeak nanoCDN and AirTies’ solution enables operators to extend CDN technology into the subscriber home, reducing their capital and operational expenses. Because AirTies’ media streamers can simultaneously connect to up to four home devices, operators can now deliver a superior OTT experience anywhere, on any device.”

Leveraging home networks, nanoCDN dramatically lowers infrastructure investments for operators while allowing them to deliver high-quality video services more efficiently to end-users. nanoCDN improves the scalability of live OTT TV content by effectively managing video consumption peaks that are not supported by the network infrastructure.

AirTies’ Air4742 dual-band concurrent media streamer provides reliable, predictable bandwidth and unprecedented high-speed performance for real-time video distribution and data transmission to the home. Featuring four Wi-Fi™ antennas, the streamer can easily be connected to any device with an Ethernet port, such as connected TVs, STBs, smartphones, tablets, and game consoles, to stream high-quality SD and HD video simultaneously over a 5GHz connection. Utilizing the company’s Air5650 WAN VDSL router, service providers can offer sufficient bandwidth for Internet services.

“We’re thrilled to implement Broadpeak’s nanoCDN on our industry-leading media streamer and router solutions,” said Bulent Celebi, executive chairman and founder of AirTies Wireless Networks. “Together, Broadpeak and AirTies are making high-quality, live OTT content a reality for consumers on any device.”

In conjunction with the new partnership, AirTies has joined the Broadpeak Open Alliance (BOA). BOA aims to improve and accelerate OTT rollouts by encouraging interoperability with third-party technology providers.

Service providers struggled for years to make high-quality, reliable wireless video streaming a reality. They often confronted pervasive problems that seemed impossible to resolve. Lately technical developments have made it possible to overcome problems commonly associated with wireless video distribution, particularly coverage area, packet loss, interference, quality of service, jitter and latency. Recently, it seems that wireless video streaming has finally come of age.

Almost every wireless solution that came out in the past, worked in environments where the transmitter and receivers were in close proximity and there was no wireless interference. When these conditions were not met, the video delivery was very poor, resulting in freezes and pixilation.

The use of reinforced concrete and brick, particularly in older buildings, has posed the biggest obstacle to wireless streaming. The walls and floors severely weaken the wireless signals and also create a phenomenon called multipath while signals are passing through or reflected by them. Both weak signals and strong multipath results in packet loss and lowers data rate. However, the development of new technology called MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), which incorporates multiple transmitters and receivers in the same device, successfully overcomes this hurdle by increasing tolerance against signal attenuation and multipath. Moreover, growing popularity of using 5 GHz bands with many available frequency channels to increase the network capacity and avoid interference has revolutionised wireless streaming. Today dynamic channel management technology scans the available streaming channels for interference, traffic and noise. It then automatically selects the optimal channel with least interference to deliver multi-HD video streams. There are also new standards that ensure Quality of Service to high-priority video packets against low-priority data packets.

Technological developments aside, what are the practical developments of this technology and how can the average consumer benefit from these developments and enjoy reliable, wireless video streaming?

A Retrospective: Then and Now

For many years, the ability to stream IP video inside a home was a goal pursued by a variety of players. Several vendors developed a number of proprietary solutions. Despite some incremental industry technological advancements, no universal solution to the challenge of complete wireless streaming was realised until recently.

The IEEE, one of the world’s largest professional organisations specialising in the advancement of technology, has developed many wireless LAN (local area network) standards for solutions and products to adhere to over recent years, each with varying levels of success and failures.

When we started with 11Mbps 802.11b devices, it quickly became apparent that video delivery over Wi-Fi networks was hindered by a low data rate, high packet loss and poor quality of service. We were then reassured with a new, faster standard (54 Mbps) and 802.11a was introduced. However, even the 802.11a was limited: it only operated in 5GHz frequency band and 802.11b devices were interoperable with the 802.11a standard. Shortly after 802.11a, the next iteration was developed, the 802.11g standard and 802.11g was very successful for internet access and data delivery but it was not good enough to deliver video. It suffered from packet loss, interference and insufficient wireless range issues.

Today the common wireless LAN standard is 802.11n. Thus far, 802.11n has proven to be the most successful because it provides a framework for chipset developers when building support for video steaming. The 802.11n standard was the first that used MIMO  and allowed up to four transmitters and four receivers (1x1 to 4x4) to run simultaneously to increase the wireless data rate up to 600 Mbps. MIMO technology not only increases the data rate to 600 Mbps, it also increases wireless coverage range by using multiple antennas to transmit and receive.

Due to the higher costs of having multi-transmitter and receiver circuits when the 802.11n standard came into force, Wi-Fi chipset companies did not implement more than two transmitters and  two receivers. One company, Quantenna, focused efforts on developing a unique chipset with 4x4 MIMO. With this technology wireless devices could reach a data rate of 600 Mbps while increasing the coverage range. Practically speaking, Quantenna chips make it possible to stream multiple HD video channels simultaneously and cover an unprecedentedly wide wireless range.

Bridging the Gap

In the absence of a truly effective Wi-Fi solution for wireless video streaming an alternative, known as Power Line Communication Technology, was employed. Power line communication systems carry data on the same wires as those for electric power. Consumers can buy power line adapter sets at most electronics retailers and use them to establish a wired connection using existing electrical wiring in the home.

Today power line adaptors only deliver one or two HD streams. Unfortunately, power line suffers from low quality wiring in homes and interference generated by other electronic devices using the same electric wires. Because of this, power line adaptors cannot deliver their advertised data rates in a real home environment. The realistic limit delivers 1-2 HD video streams at an acceptable quality.

The demand for video delivery capacity in a home network continues to increase as consumers expect more. The maths is simple: a high-quality HD video starts at 10 Mbps per channel and goes up to 20 Mbps, depending on the delivery network. When a home has three HDTVs with PVRs capable of recording multiple streams simultaneously, the number of HD video streams that need to travel inside the home easily increases to nine (three for each PVR: one watch, two record). Thus, whatever the delivery solution may be, it needs to have a network capacity between 90-180 Mbps. No power line adaptors can deliver that performance.

Looking Ahead: the Future of Wi-Fi

New standards and recent innovations in wireless networking have made the concept of the networked home a reality and seamless video streaming via a Wi-Fi network feasible. From my perspective, there are three essential components to make the experience of a wirelessly networked home truly compelling to the consumer: 1) a viable network capable of streaming multi HD video throughout the home, 2) the ease of installation and use, and 3) the integration of applications that will ignite consumer interest.

The new 4x4 MIMO chipset is capable of delivering the wireless performance we have all been waiting for at an affordable price. Industry leaders in Europe and America are currently testing this technology. Many regard 4x4 as the right solution, and many more are set to follow suit. Although 4x4 technology solves the problem of wireless range and signal quality, it is not panacea for the problems that inhibit reliable Wi-Fi streaming across a large area. There are still notable exceptions where 4x4 technology cannot cover large houses.

This is where innovative technology, such as AirTies’ automatic mesh networking technology, complements industry standards to make wireless streaming reliable everywhere. Wireless mesh technology makes every TV with a connected wireless adapter a “mesh” point. Rather than simply receive signals from a central router, mesh points are smart: they route wireless packets to other devices to maximise the total network capacity and extend the wireless coverage area. Previously most wireless devices acted as clients and only received signals from a central router. In a large house, the client device may have a very weak reception from the central router resulting in a connection with very low data rate and high packet loss. A series of mesh points eliminates weak links and maximises the total network throughput while enabling endless wireless expansion across large area. For example, if there is a home with a wireless router and three TVs with wireless adaptors, the wireless coverage area effectively becomes four times wider than a single Access Point with three wireless clients as supported by any other product.

Mesh technology provides ultra-wide coverage and reliable wireless networking for entire home entertainment.  It builds HD video streaming solutions with unmatched range and performance, whilst avoiding problems typically associated with wireless video distribution.

Conclusion

The home networking revolution has entered a new era in which users can easily and efficiently share video and data across many devices. The success of the smart phones, tablets and internet video delivery services like BBC iPlayer has ignited user demand for video based content and made the need for wireless video streaming ubiquitous. As many broadcast operators start to deploy whole home PVR solutions where only one central PVR records live content then streams it to other TVs in the home, the delivery of many high bitrate HD videos inside the home is a great need. The most convenient way to create a home network with the capacity to deliver video and data is with wireless video streaming technology. Yet for wireless video streaming to succeed, it will need to make sound commercial sense to operators. This means that wireless networking solutions need to be affordable whilst the cost of deployment and ownership are minimal. With affordable 4x4 802.11n wireless chips, the use of 5 GHz, new QoS and interference avoidance algorithms, and mesh networking technology, delivering multi-HD video streams becomes affordable and easy to use.

Major industry supplier’s products are susceptible to security breaches due to design flaws. All AirTies wireless devices, including those in the field, are designed to prevent against such attacks and are secure from the multitude of brute force attacks today.

The Wi-Fi Alliance recommends three preventions against the recent brute force attacks, one of which has long been incorporated in AirTies’ software. If there are four failed attempts to connect to a wireless network using the pin number with an AirTies device, the AirTies device automatically locks and stops additional clients from joining the network. This prevents connection by an unidentified, malicious client and maintains complete network security. Should an AirTies device lock, simply restart the device and issue the correct pin when prompted to reconnect securely to the network

Istanbul, xx October 2011 – AirTies, the innovative wireless networking and set-top box vendor, today announced that Faroese Telecom has selected  their Air 5452 IP Gateway to roll out to its subscriber base as they upgrade to a new IPTV service.  The Faroese telecommunications provider selected the AirTies gateway for the launch of their IPTV service which will be rolled out in 2012 .

The Air 5452 Gateway is a 5GHz/2.4GHz dual band 300 Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Gateway with 4 ports.  The gateway provides DLNA support and allows network sharing of all DLNA enabled home devices including network storage and printers, through the addition of a USB device.

Faroese Telecom (FT) selected the AirTies gateways because they have been optimised to work in an advanced IPTV environment, with the ability to prioritise packets and reserve bandwidth regardless of  whether it is video or data traffic. Another key advantage of the AirTies gateway solution that prompted its selection was the gateway’s remote management capabilities, based on the TR-069 standard which will be pre-configured for delivery to FT customers.

According to Dan Olsen, Transmission manager at Faroese Telecom, “We selected the AirTies products because they are cosmetically pleasing  and deliver excellent functionality and performance. We’re looking to provide our subscribers with more channels and a variety of different packages to meet different needs.  We see the roll out of this IPTV service as an investment in the future that will give our customers a better user experience and the AirTies solution is a key ingredient.”

Tuncay Cil, VP Product Management at AirTies added, “We’re delighted that Faroese Telecom has selected AirTies IP Gateways and that our remote management functionality was such a critical factor in helping them to make that choice.  There are many IP Gateway products in the market place but AirTies knowledge and expertise in optimisation of such solutions enables AirTies to add real value and create a compelling proposition for both operators and end user alike .”

16 Aug 2011 AirTies Partners with Quantenna to Deliver Wireless HD Video Streaming with Unparalleled Range and Performance
Partnership of Two Leaders in Wi-Fi Video Chips and Software Delivers Solutions Capable of Penetrating Up To Three Concrete Floors

Fremont, Calif., and Istanbul, Turkey, August 16, 2011 – AirTies, the innovative wireless networking and set-top box vendor, is partnering with Quantenna Communications, Inc., a leader in ultra-reliable Wi-Fi networking for whole-home entertainment, to build High Definition (HD) video streaming solutions for the home with unmatched range and performance.  The state-of-the-art wireless video performance of Quantenna’s 802.11n 4x4 MIMO chipset combined with AirTies’ MAC-level distribution software enables solutions that are capable of flawlessly delivering multiple simultaneous HD video streams in the home through as many as three concrete floors.

“The biggest challenges in wireless video streaming have always been how to mitigate interference and penetrate concrete walls,” said Metin Taskin, chief technology officer at AirTies.  “Through their combined resources, Quantenna and AirTies have successfully overcome these problems. Our tests show a performance level that outstrips anything available in today’s market in terms of quality, range and reliability.  We’re hugely optimistic about the potential impact of our combined technology on the wireless home networking marketplace.”

The first fruits of the partnership between AirTies and Quantenna are new versions of AirTies’ wireless video access point (AP).  The company’s new Air 4610/1 and Air 4640/1 APs featuring Quantenna silicon will be on display during IBC 2011, September 9-13, at the AirTies stand, #B33 in Hall #5 at the RAI Amsterdam exhibition center.

“We are pleased to be collaborating with AirTies on these new APs for broadband home entertainment,” said Lionel Bonnot, vice president of sales and business development at Quantenna.  “AirTies has built a strong reputation for optimising 802.11n technology using dual-mode concurrent architectures and other proprietary enhancements, and we are very excited about how well the AirTies platform performs using our 4x4 MIMO chipsets with advanced beamforming and channel-optimisation capabilities.”

Quantenna’s silicon is the highest performing physical-layer solution on the market, with the ability to distribute multiple video streams at 1080p-120, 1080p-60 and 1080i resolution through several walls and over long distances.  The company’s QHS7xx 4x4 MIMO 802.11n chipset delivers up to 600 Mbps of bandwidth throughout the home, and enhances coverage when connecting to non-4x4 MIMO clients such as iPads or 2x2 and 3x3 MIMO clients that are often found in laptop computers.

Quantenna’s powerful silicon combined with AirTies’ video distribution technology overcomes typical problems traditionally associated with wireless video distribution, such as lost packets, jitter and latency.  The chipsets also operate in the 5GHz frequency band to avoid interference, and utilise dynamic digital beamforming along with channel management to regularly scan all available channels for noise, interference and traffic and then select the optimal route for interference-free multi-channel, HD video streaming.

Product Details
The partnership between AirTies and Quantenna helps service providers overcome the serious issue of high installation costs by offering a complete plug-and-play, pre-configured user experience.  The jointly developed Air 4610/1 and Air 4640/1 APs are designed to give clear and simple user feedback via two LED lights that indicate whether or not the product is connected and HD video is streaming.  This plug-and-play functionality makes the AirTies APs some of the easiest products of their kind to set up and use.

Offering a choice of Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet connections, the new AirTies wireless APs enable IP gateways to be wirelessly connected to set-top boxes or connected TVs.  They also enable IP gateways to act as wireless repeaters so that additional TVs, PCs, iPads or gaming devices can be connected to a wireless network and used to stream multiple HD video channels around the home, without pixilation or interference.

The Air 4610/1 and Air 4640/1 APs also feature remote management software compliant with TR-111 and TR-069 standards.  Even greater range can be achieved using AirTies’ patented AirTouch technology, which allows customers to self-install a mesh network in the home, including handling all network security and SSID settings.  The customer simply presses a single button, simultaneously, on each of the devices to be linked.  AirTies’ AirTouch technology also allows Automatic Configuration Sharing, in which any changes to a node’s wireless configuration are automatically sent to all nodes in the network. The company’s new generation of wireless video devices also complies with the Code of Conduct (COC) standard, attesting to their low energy consumption.

Availability
The AirTies Air 4610/1 and Air 4640/1 APs will be available for shipping in the fourth calendar quarter of 2011.  Work is also underway to incorporate the Quantenna chipset into the next generation of AirTies gateway products, including one that has been named a finalist in the ConnectedWorld.TV Awards competition that is held during IBC2011.  Winners will be announced at a gala dinner during the conference.

AirTies chose to add Ekioh to its list of supported browsers in response to customer demand and in order to penetrate new markets - particularly those in Eastern and Central Europe where Ekioh is widely deployed.  The Ekioh browser and UI is based on the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard, reknown for its ability to render graphics in a superior manner to HTML. One key advantage of the new UI is its ability to scale up or down between SD and HD resolutions seamlessly and its ability to deliver the optimal resolution based on the resolution and dimensions of the screen available.   The SVG Engine also requires minimal memory and processor resources, also driving down the cost of the STB and making it more affordable.

Another important feature of the partnership is the freedom it offers for customisation of the UI according to different operator requirements, and the ease with which designers can export their designs out of third party applications such as Adobe Illustrator onto the STB to see the effect, thereby maintaining the integrity of the original design concept, resulting in a better design for the consumer.   With full support for AJAX and XMLHttpRequest, content can also be modified on-the-fly from remote servers, for uses such as television guides (EPGs), video-on-demand menus and shopping carts, on your IPTV STB

According to Jim Lomax, EVP Sales of AirTies, “Ease of use and quality of the user experience are key watch words for the IPTV and OTT market. We believe that Ekioh’s SVG based flexible UI engine and browser combined with our own cutting edge STB design will set the bar for the STB of the future.”
Stephen Reeder, Commercial Director of Ekioh added, “Our two organisations share a determination to provide a user experience second to none and AirTies innovation in the delivery of wireless IPTV set top boxes combined with their Air Touch technology for simple set up offers a compelling solution for both the retail and operator market place.”

The collaboration between the two innovative OTT companies was born from a desire to offer the following turnkey solutions: For ISPs, mobile operators and content providers looking to enhance their broadband offerings with additional entertainment services; for existing Pay TV companies wanting to enrich their content offering with web and home media services or to expand to new platforms, like mobile. AirTies wireless STB features advanced user interface with hardware graphic acceleration through a browser. It has the flexibility of a browser-based middleware, while providing transparent menus, smooth graphic effects and animations, enabling the user to intuitively manage and view personal content such as photos, home videos, and music on his TV and entertainment sets. In addition, it has full wireless connectivity, which is proven to offer excellent service quality, overcoming latency and jitter issues associated with alternative wireless solutions. By  removing the need for cables between networked equipment such as STBs, PCs, printers, storage devices and IP Gateways, it delivers on the promise of a truly networked digital home and offers users the very latest in HD graphical images.

According to Danny Peled, CEO of GooMe, “The AirTies AirTouch 7124 STB was an easy choice as a preferred platform because it ticked key boxes for our content management system, such as dual core processor capabilities, support for progressive downloads (to overcome issues of network latency), Universal Plug and Play and support for DTT channels.” He added, “Other aspects that really appealed included the fact that it supports different Codecs for web and home media formats and comes complete with the Broadcom state-of-the-art graphics chipset.”

Bulent Celebi, CEO of AirTies comments, “We are very excited about the potential offered by the partnership with another highly innovative company like GooMe. Both organisations are committed to building the next generation home networking solutions and share the vision of the connected home network that allows the freedom to circulate various sources of digital content between different devices, offering people the ability to consume digital content on whichever medium is most convenient; whether in the home on the PC or TV, or out and about on the mobile handset.”

Istanbul, 14 September 2009 - AirTies, the innovative wireless home networking vendor, announced today it has been selected by Dutch service provider, Caiway, to support an expansion in operations which will see it provide IPTV services to its customers.  Using AirTies core IP set-top box platform, Caiway will deliver in excess of 350 TV and radio channels through IPTV to a fast growing number of subscribers, using existing and new to build fibre networks.  The mutually beneficial partnership will also help to support existing operations and planned growth into new markets for both parties.

Caiway will deploy the AirTies high definition Air 7120, which is the only set-top box currently available with NAND flash to enable pause-live TV functionality as standard.  Its fast central processing unit, wireless option and superior graphics capabilities will allow Caiway to offer an advanced IPTV solution to its customers.

“Following Caiway’s decision to move into the IPTV services space, we wanted to ensure that we partnered with a vendor that had the same values as us to remain consistent.  AirTies met this criterion perfectly, and not just in terms of company ethos: its value chain, from middleware integration and conditional access, was also a good match for Caiway.   The technical team demonstrated extensive hardware and software know-how, which is a great basis for our ongoing relationship.  Its in-house R&D department also means it can remain flexible, with fast response times, good geographic proximity and multi-national and multi-lingual operations, all of which will provide an excellent base for Caiway to expand in the future,” said Aart Verbree, CEO of Caiway.

26 Aug 2009 AirTies Develops “Plug & Share” Technology

With AirTies Plug & Share technology, you can now connect your home or office printer and external USB disc to all computers in your network via AirTies’ gateway and access point. Thanks to this feature, you can get your print job done in the places where you have more than one PC connected to each other, even with the main computer in your network switched off. This technology also enables quite a few common applications, such as watching movies, sharing files or listening to music via AirTies Internet access products.

With AirTies Plug & Share technology you can now connect your home or office printer and external USB disc to all computers in your network. Just connect your printer and external discs to AirTies’ gateway and access point, and you are set to go!

Thanks to this feature, you can get your print job done in the places where you have more than one PC connected to each other, even with the main computer in your network switched off.

This technology also enables quite a few common applications, such as watching movies, sharing files or listening to music via AirTies Internet access products.

AirTies, a company that develops and markets products that wirelessly connect electronic devices to each other, the Internet and people, continues to develop new technologies in line with its vision. Founded in 2004 by a management and technical team from the Silicon Valley, US, AirTies has continuously invested into the in-house R&D. The “Plug & Share” technology developed by the company’s R&D team is yet more proof of how this investment is paying off. This technology allows users in environments with more than one PC to connect to a USB printer and share the data on USB external discs over AirTies gateways and access points, without the hassle of setting up a network.  You can access all voice, video and data files stored on your USB disc and USB flash disc via gateway and access point. Thus, homes and small businesses are freed from the need to purchase expensive equipment in order to share their networked printers or external discs.

Printer and disc sharing becomes faster and more economic when you use AirTies’ products that support this new technology, namely Air 5450, Air 5050 gateways and Air 4450 access point.

Installation is made easy with the AirTies Automatic Setup feature, so each user is able to set up the system without the need for consulting IT support service.

Access a Printer via Your Gateway and Access Point

Thanks to Plug & Share technology printing from a computer that is not connected to the printer is no longer a problem!

While acquiring of a printer server or a network printer is a must for sharing a printer, the Plug & Share technology does it for you via a gateway or an access point at no additional cost.

Any USB printer that is being connected to an AirTies gateway or an access point can be made accessible from all computers in the system after an easy setup, and printing can be achieved from any computer using a wireless connection.

In other words, with the Plug & Share technology serving as a print server, home users and small offices & businesses can open their printers for shared use without the need for technical support or IT consultancy. With the former technology, a PC that is connected to the printer must always stay on, and switching it off could be easily forgotten, which may result in an extra power consumption cost for the user. Since the printer is connected directly to a gateway or an access point with the Plug & Share feature, printing is possible even though the main computer is turned off.

Saving the Hard Disc Memory Space

AirTies Plug & Share technology transforms gateways and access points into a kind of “external disc network” for computers.

Thanks to this new technology, USB discs used for storing and moving data become “a common memory space”, thus resolving issues related to storing the same file on different computers and sending files from one PC to another experienced by households and small businesses without network infrastructure.

PC’s hard discs memory is used more effectively, and discs don’t fill up. Compared to the external discs with their own software enabling the sharing feature (NAS=Network Attached Storage), Plug & Share technology provides the same functionality via gateways and access points with a huge cost advantage. With Plug & Share technology, sharing data using the available USB disc becomes possible without purchasing a new external disc.

As AirTies’ gateways and access points feature AirTies 11N technology and 300 Mbps speed, accessing and sharing files is easier and more effective. While setup is made very easy for users with the help of AirTies intuitive solutions, security and work group settings are installed automatically. Plug & Share technology will make sharing data, music, video and photos much simpler, and in the near future, setting advanced rules would be possible. If necessary, a user will be able to prevent access to any files in the network by other users connected to a gateway or an access point.

Gateways Available on the Market Will Upgrade Themselves Automatically

Users who had previously purchased Air 5450 and Air 5050 gateways will be able to benefit from this technology at no additional cost thanks to the automatic firmware upgrade feature.

24 Oct 2007 Evolution of Wireless Local Area Networks
When someone with some experience using wireless networks hears the term called Wireless LAN, the first thing that comes to his / her mind is IEEE (International Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.11 or Wifi. In reality we can assume that this technology has started when the first Wireless LAN standard was accepted by 802.11 commitee. It is quite hard to believe but Wireless LAN speed has increased 150 times since it was first introduced, reaching up to 300 Mbps from 2 Mbps. Bülent Çelebi also talked about AirTies' strategies of "Going Global" . "We are customizing and localizing our products and services for each country. For example, Greece has different telecommunications infrastructure: they are using both ISDN and PSTN lines. That´s why Greek consumers are buying two separate routers. Our R&D team consolidated two technologies in one single device, world's first ADSL2+ product that supports both Annex A and Annex B structures on the same hardware."
For more than 25 years, Inc. magazine has celebrated the remarkable achievements of today's entrepreneurial superstars -the men and women leading the 500 fastest-growing, private companies in America- with the annual Inc. 500 list.
Each year, the Inc. 500 Conference and Awards Ceremony brings together both a new class of Inc. 500 honorees and the list's alumni for three days of powerful networking, inspired learning, and momentous celebration.
This year, Inc.com will present the Inc. 5,000 -the first ever expansion of the Inc. 500 list. These new honorees will also join the festivities, bringing the excitement of the 26th Annual Inc. 500 Conference and Awards Ceremony to an unprecedented level.

7 Jun 2007 A competition from AirTies for students
While creating a difference in Turkey due to its R&D approach, AirTies also encourages university students in Turkey towards research and development via the competition they have prepared. After providing the required technical hardware to the participants of the competition, AirTies will award the first three students.

The contest whose purpose was to encourage university students towards studies in R&D was organized by Airties, the leading firm in the sector of wireless data, sound and image technology. The participants are required to develop software for Embedded C Programs in Linux. The competition is open to all university and masters degree students around Turkey, who are willing to submit their projects for the assessment of the jury members. AirTies will determine the jury members from a list of experts and engineers. Various awards will be presented to the owners of the first three projects.
Airties has achieved for having qualified Turkish engineers and experts return back to their homeland and therefore it now employs a team of 45 people in its R&D department of which 16 engineers were previously working in Silicon Valley. Having reached a great success after applying for 10 patent applications in a short period of 3 years, the R&D Group Manager and Technological Visionary Metin Taşkın of AirTies said that their objective with this competition was to encourage universities towards research and development.
While pointing to the fact that 25 percent of the total number of AirTies employees work in the R&D department, Taşkın also explained the reason as to why the subject of the competition was determined as Embedded C Program in Linux:
While the open source operating system Linux is becoming widespread on desktops and servers, it gained popularity because it is an open code standard open to everybody. It is also easily adaptable to support special hardware in devices, it is simple to transfer from one device to another and provides ease in the development of new applications because it is an embedded operating system. Therefore while C is the basic programming language in Linux, it is also valued as the most popular development platform in embedded devices. Both the worldwide increase in the use of devices that operate embedded software and the rise in the Linux operating system as an embedded software development platform have directed AirTies, which is currently using this platform in their products, to encourage its use in schools.
Participation in the competition whereby all university students in Turkey can apply until the 11th of June 2007, can include the application of groups up to three people.
